Six things to help you prepare for your headshot or portrait session with me

1. Pre-shoot consultation

Before delving into the photoshoot specifics, a pre-shoot consultation is very helpful. This can be done via an online form i’ll send you, a Zoom video call or telephone.

Use this opportunity to discuss your vision, expectations, objectives and any questions you might have. It’s also a time for the photographer to understand your personality and preferences, ensuring a tailored photoshoot experience. Be ready with ideas or examples of what you like, and be open to suggestions.

2. Understand your objectives

Clarifying your goals for the photoshoot is essential. Consider what you want these images to convey about you, whether it’s professional credibility or your unique artistic flair. This understanding will direct your choices in styling, location, and the overall tone of the shoot.

3. Choose the right outfit(s)

Your outfit should align with the shoot’s purpose. For professional headshots, opt for classic, timeless clothing. For more artistic portraits, feel free to express your personal style. Bring multiple options to the shoot for variety.

4. Grooming and makeup

Attention to grooming and makeup are crucial in helping you achieve the desired look. Facial hair may need a little extra grooming as photos can highlight something you may not see in the mirror every day.

Unless you’d like to achieve a more dramatic look, aim for natural, enhancing makeup that will focus the photo on your natural contours rather than the makeup technique used. Consider hiring a professional makeup artist for the best results.

5. The right mindset for best results

A positive mindset can greatly influence your photoshoot experience. Be open and communicative with me, and trust that we are both working towards the same goal - to capture your best self.

If you don’t feel comfortable doing something, please tell me.

6. Planning

Don’t overlook practical details like where the shoot location will be, the weather, transportation (will you travel in your outfit?), and ensuring you’re well-rested and hydrated.

If you’re hoping to achieve a certain look or style, let me know ahead or during the shoot so that I can adapt accordingly.

These factors can significantly impact the smooth running of your session and help us both get the most out our time together.

Conclusion

Preparing for a photoshoot is a blend of mental, physical and logistical planning. By following these steps, you’re setting yourself up for a successful and enjoyable photoshoot experience together.

If you have questions before your shoot, or about any of the above please get in touch with me.
