MSNBC Acquires Newsvine – Social Publishing going mainstream

by Matthew Ogston on October 8, 2007

Today MSNBC announced that is has acquired Newsvine – a social publishing network that rewarded it’s contributors by sharing its ad revenue. I’ve never fully understood the attraction of Newsvine, although i have used it a few times for wastefully submitting news stories and the odd opinion. First of all the main news stories always come directly from the Associated Press network – aggregated from their automatic news wire. The user generated articles nearly always taking second place in the right hand column. To me this setup seems a little pointless. Why have a powerful social publishing platform such as Newsvine if the user submitted content never has chance to make it big?
