LinkedIn Ads – is it any good for startups?

linkedin ads logoAt the moment this is really an open question, so apologies if you were expecting a comprehensive post with a conclusion.

I started my first LinkedIn Ads campaign this morning as a test to see how effective their ad platform is compared to Facebook Ads, or Google AdWords. For those of you not familiar with LinkedIn ads, the ads normally appear on the right hand side of the LinkedIn member interface, see below.

linkedin_ads_exampleYou can be charged by clicks or impressions, set daily limits & max CPC etc – so all the usual stuff is there, but where LinkedIn really stands out is the very powerful ad targeting. Imagine Facebook Ad targeting but aimed only at professionals and you’ll start to get a feel for how focused the targeting can be.

I’m going to post another update once my campaign is finished. I’ll let you know how it performs, and how much is cost me. I hope it performs better than this.

What I saw was the first 24 hours 10000 impressions, then next few days 400 total.. yet I still had the max at the suggested rate ( 6USD – which was gutting enough ).. I copied the same ad, and ran it as a new ad, next to the old ad, with the same max bid.. and it brought 11000 impressions in the first 24 hours, then dropped to around 100 a day..

the bids didn't change, yet the impressions did. so they must be doing something around clicks.. and that's to maximise revenue, and not helping the advertiser. I am truly disappointed with them..
