15 Top UX resources for rapid prototyping

by Matthew Ogston on May 17, 2010

I’ve recently completed a chunk of research to shortlist tools that could help our team plan and communicate the user experience (UX) more effectively for PageDo. We have a distributed team – we’re not all based at the same location, therefore we need a tool that help us communicate ideas and concepts when face-to-face contact is not possible.

I’ve listed a number of the tools that made it to our shortlist below. If you’re in a similar situation, hopefully this will save you a few hours searching for the same answers

  • I'd like to suggest WireframeSketcher rapid wireframing tool. It's a desktop tool that's cross-platform, with fast and native UI. It can be used for quick wireframes but also for large projects with many screens. You can use version control plugins for Subversion and Git to share wireframes via a repository. WireframeSketcher also comes as a plug-in for any Eclipse IDE so if you are using one - you've just got lucky :)
  • Thanks for the heads up Peter. What are the advantages of Wireframe Sketcher instead of something line Balsamiq?
  • Matthew,
feature-wise they are similar. I outlined some differences above. There
are more, like support for storyboarding and screen flows, beautiful
PDFs, better support for large projects. Here's a UXMovement article that talks about some of them.

MockupTiger is a good html5 wireframe, you can host it on your domain, desktop, switch between hand drawn look, change fonts and prototype dashboard mockups with data
  • DavidFrost01
    Thanks!
  • Roy Scholten
I just want a portable, foldable scanner-sheet-thing with a scan-to-web button for my pen and paper sketches :)
  • Thanks for the comment Cristian - is FlairBuilder available on both Mac and Windows? I'm assuming there is no online version based on my quick scan of your site?
  • Hey, you can also add FlairBuilder to the list, as an interactive wireframing/prototyping tool.

    Thanks,
    Cristian
