Apple (AAPL) may live to regret its claim that Safari for Windows is “secure from day one.” Within hours of the Safari beta download going online, the blogosphere lit up with numerous accounts of security holes and exploits, some simple, some complex. This is highly embarrassing given that Apple has a lousy track record with security on OS X, in addition to a hostile attitude towards security bloggers and researchers.
I personally downloaded a copy hoping to give it whirl on my Windows XP Pro laptop. I was highly disappointed to discover that shell of the browser UI would not render correctly, leaving large spaces in the interface where the menu items should have appeared. The browser URL bar wouldn’t accept non-Apple URLs, and the search box in the top right-hand corner would not function. I’ll be sticking to my copies of Flock and FireFox2 for the meantime. Microsoft’s IE team can sleep easy in their beds tonight.
